Blackwork Art Piece
Blackwork, sometimes historically termed Spanish blackwork, is a form of embroidery generally using black thread, although other colors are also used on occasion.
"Mahjong"
designed by Banu Demirel
stitched by Michele Ray
This piece represents approximately 250 hours of hand-stitching, using embroidery floss as well as specialty embroidery thread. While Blackwork is named for the black thread originally used, Michele has a great fondness for vibrant, joyous color, and customized this design to fit her artistic sensibilities. The designer, Banu Demirel, is an artist in Turkey, who provides her patterns for free, and with whom Michele was in contact regarding this work. Michele is very pleased to offer this labor of love for the benefit of CLASS Academy. Michele's general hourly rate for her artistic labor is $25/hour, so this represents over $6000 of work! Please enjoy!
